Fun Facts about Apopka
The city of Apopka, Florida lies 20 miles northwest of Orlando. Apopka lives mostly along U.S. 441 and Florida State Road 414, a toll road. The city hugs Lake Apopka North Shore nature preserve, separating the community from the lake with miles of green space. The North Shore's wetlands are the ideal place for hiking, biking, and horseback riding where permitted. There are bird-watching and butterfly spotting opportunities throughout the trail system.
Named for the Seminole word for “potato-eating place,” Apopka lies within Orange County. Its borders resemble a checkerboard pattern, making it easy to slip in and out of the boundaries with a simple drive or even a long walk through the city. It was a quiet, rural destination until after the Civil War when the railway lines created a minor boom. Apopka is home to five buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The town incorporated in 1882 and the city followed in 1929. Its current estimated population is 53,489.
